Literature Text

"Good afternoon" I said as I entered Long Island, a sports bar owned by Aikawa Kunihiko, my uncle that I have no blood relation to. The bar also acts somewhat as a 'base' for Yamato and his old friends, too. Uncle, dressed casually as always, looked up from wiping the glasses. "Oh, good afternoon, Mrs. Kogami!" Uncle answered jovially, his eyes glinting with mischievousness. I sat down on a chair and placed my right cheek on the bar counter, trying to cool my body from the cold surface after a long morning walking outside. "Oh? You seem to be quiet. Usually you would be giving me a comeback by now for calling you Mrs. Kogami" Uncle teased as he finished wiping the glasses. Ignoring his remark, I sat up and let out a sigh. "Uncle, can you give me a glass of mineral water? I'm thirsty" I said, looking at Uncle. "No shochu for the day?" he asked me and I shook my head in return. "I need to stay focused for the preparations of the wedding" I answered as Uncle gave me a glass of water.

Before Uncle could say anything, both of us heard a masculine voice saying "Good afternoon" and turned our heads towards the voice. Shibasaki Ren, an old friend of Yamato and Uncle, entered the bar, looking a little sleepy as always. "Oh, Ayane, you're here?" Ren said as he sat down next to me. "Hey, you should call her Mrs. Kogami now" Uncle said, his voice stern, though I noticed that he was suppressing a smile. Ren looked at Uncle with a confused face, then realisation dawned upon him. "Oh, yeah. You guys are already husband and wife by law. When's the wedding?" Ren asked, ignoring Uncle's grin. As I heard this, I took out two envelopes and gave it to the both of them. "A wedding invitation? What a trouble. You see me almost every day!" Uncle exclaimed as he take out the wedding invitation in the envelope. "It's courtesy to do so, even when we see each other everyday" I quipped, letting out a small smile. "Oh, you're back!" Uncle said, laughing a little.

"What do you mean, 'she's back'? She's been here since the beginning" Ren said, his face serious. "Oh, no. It's just that she seems to be half-dead when she first arrived here" Uncle said, putting down his wedding invitation. "How can someone be half-dead? That seems to be unscientific" Ren answered, already frowning. Before they started to have a debate on whether a person can be half-dead or not, Kajima Yuta and Saeki Takamasa entered the bar together. "Oh, if it isn't Mrs. Kogami!" Yuta exclaimed as he walked towards the bar with his usual grin. Saeki sighed as Yuta said this and took a seat to my other side. "If only you didn't register yet, I would still have a chance to take you away from Yamato" Saeki said, giving me his usual flirtatious smile that I have grown used to.

"So what are you guys doing here?" Yuta asked as he sat beside Saeki, stretching. "You're one to talk. I'm here because I'm free!" Uncle said, looking at Yuta. "Lunch" Ren and Saeki answered in unison. "Getting some rest" I answered. "Somehow, I feel kinda lonely. I have a holiday, yet here I am, hanging out over here. I need a woman! Hey, Aya-chan, you got any girl friends that you can introduce me to?" Yuta asked, staring at me with puppy eyes. "Getting some rest? Is that related to you being 'half-dead', as Kuni puts it?" Ren asked, looking at me with concern. "Tired, huh? What, did Yamato already tire you out at night already?" Saeki said cheekily. "Saeki! Rude!" Yuta yelled, punching Saeki's arms playfully.

As I look on at Saeki and Yuta swapping jokes, with Uncle and Ren's heated debate in the background, I stared at my glass of mineral water, thinking back of the event last night. This morning, I wanted to ask Yamato about it, but he seemed to be in a hurry and left the house after having breakfast together. "Serizawa Kaori" I murmured as I took a sip of my water. "Hm? Did I just hear Kaori's name from you, Ayane?" Saeki asked, looking at me. I blinked my eyes, not sure by what he meant until realisation dawned upon me. "I said it out loud, didn't I?" I said sheepishly, putting down my glass of water. "Kaori? You mean, Kaori the Beauty?" Yuta said, already looking at me. Uncle chuckled at this. "Kaori the Beauty? What a weird title to give her. Why not call her 'Kaori the Woman that hasn't dated Kajima Yuta?" Uncle said, grinning. "What? And also, that's too long, Kuni!" Yuta yelled, his face red.

"So Yamato already talked about Kaori to you" Saeki said, looking at me with gentle eyes. I looked down at my cup and shook my head guiltily. "Then, how?" Ren said, forgetting his debate with Uncle completely by now. I explained to them of my one second glance of the name on the wedding invitation. I didn't mention about the phone call, I didn't think it was that important. Besides, I would rather ask Yamato about it, though telling the others about my experience was a mystery to me. Uncle looked at me and I could sense that he seems to understand my thoughts because he only gave me a mysterious smile. "Why not you ask the man yourself?" Uncle asked and I groaned. "He's not even here!" I moaned when a voice I recognise so well spoke up behind me, "Who's 'he' that you're talking about?". I sat straight up and looked behind me.

Yamato stared at me, his arms folded, waiting for the answer to his question. Why's he angry with me? I'm the one who's supposed to be staring him down! I turned around to fully look at him and folded my arms. "Who is Serizawa Kaori?" I asked. "That was too quick!" Yuta yelled out. "This looks fun, I wonder how it will turn out" I heard Saeki said. "Forward" Ren murmured. Ignoring them, I sat there, still staring at Yamato. By then, he had a surprised look on his face but he regained his composure after a second or two. "You saw, didn't you?" Yamato asked me instead, his expression unreadable. I was about to answer him when another familiar voice spoke up from the entrance.

"Hey, everyone's here! Even the married couple!" Maruyama Takao said jovially as he walked towards us, oblivious to the atmosphere emitting at the bar. "Takao, I thought you were busy with work" Uncle said, ignoring the atmosphere himself. "Oh, I pulled an all-nighter yesterday, so I'm quite free today. I guessed that maybe some of you are here, so here I am" Takao answered, his usual gentle smile on his face. "By the way, I met with someone really interesting outside!" Takao continued, sitting down beside Ren. "What, you saw a woman?" Saeki said lightly, as if he didn't just enjoy watching both me and Yamato having a staredown a while ago. "You'll see when she comes in. She had a phone call" Takao answered, grinning.

As if on cue, all of us heard the sound of high heels getting louder. Curious, I broke my gaze from Yamato to see the 'interesting person' that Takao mentioned earlier. My heart skipped a beat as I saw the person. For no apparent reason, my instincts told me that the mysterious person that have been stuck in my mind is right in front of me. It was weird, but I'm sure of it.
